Why order matters
Local search results blend three things: how relevant your business looks for the search, how close you are to the searcher, and how prominent you appear online. You can't change distance, so effort goes into relevance and prominence.
Most businesses spread effort thinly — a few directory listings, an occasional post. A better approach is to finish the foundation first, then build pages, then build reputation. Each step makes the next one work harder.
1. Finish your Google Business Profile
Your profile is often the first thing a local customer sees. Treat it like a storefront, not a form.
- Choose the most specific primary category, then add secondary categories that match real services.
- List every service with a short plain-language description.
- Set an accurate service area or address and complete hours, including holidays.
- Upload real photos of work, team and premises regularly.
- Add a booking, quote or order link that goes to a matching page, not just the homepage.
2. Build one page per service and area
A single “Services” page rarely ranks for specific searches. Create a dedicated page for each core service, and pages for the main towns or neighbourhoods you serve when you genuinely serve them.
Each page should answer: what the service is, who it's for, what it costs or what affects price, how the process works, proof that you do it well, and a clear next step. Avoid copying the same text with the town name swapped — thin duplicated pages tend to perform poorly.
3. Keep name, address and phone consistent
Your business name, address (or service area) and phone number should match everywhere: your website, Google, Apple Maps, and the main directories for your industry. Inconsistency creates doubt for both customers and search engines.
4. Make reviews a routine
Recent, steady reviews help customers choose and support local prominence. Pick one moment to ask — when a job finishes or a visit ends — and ask every customer. Reply to every review, positive or negative, within a couple of days.
5. Measure what matters
Connect Google Search Console and Google Analytics, and track calls, form submissions and bookings as conversions. Record a monthly baseline so you can tell whether changes worked. Local rankings take time to move; judge progress over months, not days.
